Our tips for remote working & meetups

Discord

Free massive voice-chatting platform made for gamers (keep reading). Gamers are demanding when it comes to quality and latency, so Discord is amazing for voice chatting. We use it for our podcast.

Why it’s great

  • High-quality free voice-chatting
  • Extra free features like sharing your screen and webcam with up to 10 people
  • Low-latency, high performance. No slowdowns.
  • Dedicated app, so runs smoothly.
  • Works, even if you’re not a gamer!

 

Limitations

  • video for up to 10 people
  • Easy to setup, yet 1 to 2 more steps than tools like Jitsi

 

Suggested uses

  • Voice meetings (with many people)
  • Video chatting & Sharing slides in groups with up to 10 people (Use direct messaging to video call, then add more friends up to 10 people)
  • Combine Keynote Live with Discord to host large conferences with an online chatroom/community

Mural

Online whiteboard tool for collaborative working.

Why it’s great

  • Intuitive and easy to use
  • Modern tools like voting and timers are built-in
  • Many templates to get you started quickly
  • Hosts can guide/summon everyone to look at the same thing

 

Limitations

  • Might slow down with many people in 1 Mural

 

Suggested uses

  • Online workshops – Create a template with clear instructions and it will be easy to follow along
  • Online meetups – Share slides / present and note at the same time.

Why it’s great

  • Free video-chatting
  • Create multiple rooms
  • Allows sharing of your screen
  • Option to self-host their service. Giving total control of where the data goes.

 

Limitations

  • Will slow down your computer with many people in 1 room (work-around: start on Discord, and share breakout rooms for up to 10 people)

 

Suggested uses

  • Online presentations – Share your slides and talk at the same time
  • Create breakout rooms for events that would normally have different physical rooms

 

How to use

  1. Use a supported browser like Google Chrome
  2. Click the “Show me” button below
  3. Enter a name for your meeting. (This will be a permanent meeting room that you can return to)
  4. Press “Go”
  5. Give your browser permission to access your microphone and webcam.
  6. Share the URL of your new Jitsi meeting room with your friends/colleagues.
  7. Tell them the info from Step 5.

Notion

Text editor on steroids. Work together on multiple documents, create documentation together, comment, etc. Export to HTML, Markdown and PDF to share.

Very versatile tool for working together.

Why it’s great

  • Explore its many, many different ways of working!
